A simple adornment from nature, to a delicious homemade corn tortilla

About this dish

This recipe is wildly easy and the end product is beautiful.

Did you know certain figs varieties leaves carry a creamy/coconut/vanilla aroma - especially when boiled? Get ready for the most special smell to fill your kitchen!

IMPORTANT: I am using a Fig Leaf. Not just any Fig Leaf. A young and tender leaf, from the Fig Tree Ficus carica. This is a common fig tree variety.

You can use the

leaf i've used here, or get creative with another beautiful edible leaf.

This young fig leaf is best used when blanched/boiled & dried.

-You can fill a small pot with water to cover the leaf. Boil/simmer the leaves for 10 minutes.

-Then, dry them on a linen completely before using them in the tortilla

When you're ready to use them...it's simple.

Just follow my homemade corn tortilla recipe here.

At step 10. Instead of pressing the tortilla press all the way down, press it half way. Then add your fig leaf to the tortilla. This time, press all the way down on the tortilla press. Continue to Step 12 in recipe.

Just halfway press a tortilla, then place your leaf on the tortilla, this time press down all the way in your tortilla press & finished. The leaf is enmeshed into the tortilla and is ready for cooking.

Fall is a beautiful time to get creative, get the crafts going and make beauty - while reflecting on the changing seasons.

I hope this sparks some inspiration for your kitchen magic.

  • 1 Cup Masa Harina (white, blue, yellow, red)

  • 1/4 tsp Salt

  • 1.4 Cups Warmed Filtered Water (you may use slightly less or slighlty more water, depending on the masa brand you use)

  • Tender Fig Leaves from the Ficus carica variety. Or another edible leaf of your choosing

  1. Take your tender fig leaves and wash them. Tender and young leaves are best.

  2. Into a small pot boil some water, enough to cover leaves

  3. Boil for 10 minutes

  4. Remove leaves from water, lie flat on linen to dry

  5. Then, follow homemade corn tortilla recipe here

  6. When at step 10 - instead of pressing all the way down with the tortilla press...just press half way down

  7. Add your fig leaf to the tortilla, cover with parchment paper, then press all the way down with the tortilla press

  8. Continue to steps 12 in the recipe

  • If you're unsure about which fig tree variety you're pulling leaves from, be cautious.

  • You can use other edible green leaves for this recipe. They will usually need to be blanched/boiled and dried before using, like in this recipe.
